The bets, detours & strange details

MIT

Math, systems and programming competitions

Truell’s personal site lists computer science and mathematics at MIT, along with work on recommendation systems, drug pipelines and programming competitions. It now describes his work as building SpaceXAI. [9] ↗

4 founders

How Copilot shaped the first editor

Aman Sanger describes moving from Vim to VS Code to use Copilot. Cursor kept the familiar editor base while the founding team built deeper codebase context and editing features. [10] ↗

GPT-4

A broader product after narrow prototypes

The founders recall experimenting with tools for financial professionals using Jupyter and with model-assisted static analysis. Early GPT-4 access made a general editor seem feasible. [10] ↗

Apr 2026

The editor turns into an agent workspace

Truell and Asif introduced Cursor 3 with an interface for managing agents and bringing the web agent experience into the desktop app. [8] ↗

Aug 2026

SpaceX closes the acquisition

Cursor says an April model-training partnership began the process that culminated in the acquisition. The company framed the transaction around access to computing capacity for its own models. [6] ↗

Failures, disputes & the other side

Refunds

A pricing change left users with surprise bills

Truell said the June 2025 pricing change was communicated poorly. Cursor clarified usage limits and offered refunds to customers who received unexpected charges. [11] ↗

Jupyter

The first experiments stayed narrow

The team’s earlier notebook and static analysis ideas addressed smaller workflows. The founders recounted the detour in the Lex episode. Financial outcomes of those prototypes were undisclosed. [10] ↗

October 2026

A tampered extension reached Cursor’s marketplace

Cursor identified two malicious versions of an extension impersonating the official Claude Code extension. It temporarily shut down the marketplace, removed the package and coordinated with the hosting provider to take the attacker’s server offline. [12] ↗
